What’s your favorite scent…besides chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven?
In Shell Point Secrets, the characters Madison and Lois use essential oils, and the character, Hunter, researches the claims made about the effectiveness of essential oils.
Most of the current research shows that inhaling the scent of lavender oil reduces anxiety and promotes sleep.
Research is ongoing, but studies are showing inhaling the molecules of particular oils stimulates neurotransmitters in the brain affecting the release of dopamine and serotonin. In particular, the oils of peppermint and lemon boost clarity of mind. Lavender, vanilla, and chamomile are calming and are thought to cool down an overactive limbic system, the part of our brain associated with fight or flight. The limbic system processes our sense of smell and very efficiently connects scents to memories.
Most essential oils are diluted in a carrier oil, placed in a vial like the ones Hunter and Madison use, and are rubbed onto the skin. Dark, glass containers protect the quality of the oils.
Because essential oils are extracted from actual plants, some people may be sensitive. Many widely used medicines are derived from plants and people respond differently. Never eat or diffuse an oil unless you have looked it up and determined it is safe to do so. Some oils are not safe to diffuse around your pets.
Do your own research, and then use the oils that lift your spirits and bring you joy.
